Basic 72 Hour Kits--Week 14--Food

The last thing to add to your 72 hour kit is food. There are many different schools of thought on the food needed to add to your 72 hour kit. Many people buy the commercial 72 hour kits (which are great) that have 3 1200 calorie bars which last for 5 years. I have a problem with those bars because I can imagine my children eating the entire bar at once and then having an incredible stomach ache and then telling my children that the bar they ate was all their food for that day. A way to avoid the stomach ache would be to have my children only eat 1 or 2 bites per meal, which would go over well for them I’m sure! :) Those of you who have those commercial 72 hour kits, when were they purchased and are the food bars still good? You might want to replace those if you need to.
I have a sister-in-law who put food into Mylar bags during a Relief Society activity and informed me that she doesn’t need to rotate the food in her 72 hour kit because those bags will keep the food good for 10 years. It might be true, but I haven’t found anything to back up those claims. Food like flour, wheat, sugar, etc stays good in those bags for 20+ years, but does processed foods? My question is, the granola bars will stay good, but will they taste stale after 10 years?
So instead of doing any of those options, I choose to rotate the food in my 72 hour kits every year during April. I choose foods that my children will eat, have high calories, and high protein. I also make sure that I have a least 2 items for each “meal” with snacks of gum or candy. Everything then fits into a gallon zip close bag. I have just found that this is the easiest way for my family to have food in their 72 hour kit. The food from the last years 72 hour kit go into a big bowl that my family can snack on for the coming weeks.
If you have another way of packing food in your 72 hour kit that you have found that works for your family, please share in the comments because I would love to learn more.
