For you that already have a basic 72 hour kit and want to add extra then look into a hand-crank flashlight. There will be no worries about batteries lasting or matches getting wet, but for good hand-crank flashlights they can be a little pricey. I would recommend that you don’t rush out and buy them all today (unless you are that kind of person), but keep your eyes out as you shop.
When we first put together our 72 hour kits there was just the two of us and one baby and we had one hand-crank flashlight. We have since purchased 4 more (no, everyone in the family doesn’t have one yet). I don’t think we purchased any of them at the same time or from the same store.
I’m a sucker for the clearance aisle at any store and I found one for $4 (regularly priced $15) at Bed Bath & Beyond (yes, I was bummed that there was only one). We found another one at Big 5 on sale for $5 (regularly priced $10) but it was the last one. I just keep my eyes out for sales and look at clearance aisles because I know I need to buy 2 more at some point.
