Today, for an advanced 72 hour kit, some nice items to have are rain ponchos, a tarp and some rope. The rain ponchos that are compact and for a one time use are great for a 72 hour kit (remember think small). Garbage bags can also double as a rain poncho. A tarp and some rope can be handy for all kinds of things from a shelter, to an outhouse, to a stretcher, to an extra pack . . . you get the idea.
The addition of a tarp and rope will necessitate a larger bag for a 72 hour kit, but not everyone in your house would need these items in their kits. We have larger bags for my husband and I that have these “one per family” items so that the children will have lighter packs. I have a friend who has a separate bag for the “one per family” items that can be traded around if needed. You decide what is best for your family situation.
