I have had a few questions about the sodium (salt) intake in the food packets, so I went and did some research. I read quite a few blogs where the authors were upset with most 72 hour kits food having too much salt. I looked carefully at the food I had in my packets and wondered if I was heavy on the salt. When I calculated all the sodium, the number 2555mg seemed astronomical!! I thought I would have to do some serious re-thinking and packaging. Before I started that monumental task, I thought it would be a good idea to find out how much salt is recommended for an average adult. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had a federal guideline of 2300mg but discovered that Americans still consume almost 1000mg more than that daily. They revised the number in 2010 to 1500mg of salt in an average adult daily diet.
So my 2555mg over 3 days wasn't looking too bad. That would mean there would be an average of 852mg a day in sodium, about half what was recommended. As I read those same blogs about food storage and their salt issues, I can rest easy and think, "It must be the other guys." :)
